MOULIN DE SAURET: 146 237 € in FEADER funding to develop organic flours and promote local wheat

Occitanie· Autres industries alimentaires

How an independent mill in Montpellier secured European funding to upgrade its production facility, develop new flours and strengthen the promotion of local cereal crops. Moulin de Sauret obtained 146 237,80 € in FEADER funding (historic 2014-2020 programming) to develop a new milling unit capable of producing organic flours from local wheat.

The company

Moulin de Sauret is an independent mill located in Montpellier, in the Hérault department.

A family-owned company, it has a long history tied to the Montpellier area and processes cereals into flours intended mainly for baking professionals.

Its catalog includes more than 80 flour products. According to the project's institutional presentation, the company works in particular with around 220 artisan bakeries, which account for 60% of its revenue, as well as with industrial bakeries.

The mill also supports its baker customers beyond flour delivery, in particular through advice and training.

The initial need

The flour market is evolving: consumers are increasingly looking for organic, local and quality products, and artisan bakers want to offer differentiated products. For a mill, this shift requires adapting manufacturing processes and production capacity. The project addresses a dual challenge: modernizing the production facility and strengthening the company's commercial differentiation.

  • Develop the production of organic flours.
  • Make greater use of local wheat.
  • Promote local cereal production.
  • Develop new flour products.
  • Increase its production capacity.
  • Adapt its industrial process to the new characteristics of raw materials.

The funded project

The project consists of developing a new milling unit to change the flour manufacturing process, making it possible to produce new flours — particularly organic ones — using local wheat.

The testimony of Jean-Pierre Passage, miller, sums up the project's purpose: European funding made it possible to adapt the manufacturing facility to produce organic flours and use local wheat.

  • Industrial modernization: adapting the manufacturing process, developing a new milling unit, and increasing production capacity.
  • Agri-food innovation: developing new flours, producing organic flours, and adapting processes to local raw materials.
  • Local value creation: using local wheat, developing relationships with regional cereal supply chains, and meeting demand for local products.

The remainder of the funding is not detailed in the institutional fact sheet consulted — it should not automatically be assumed to be self-financing. This is a historic operation (2014-2020 programming) and should not be presented as a grant currently open for applications.

The scheme used

The project received support from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (FEADER), under the 2014-2020 European programming period. It is a historic example of FEADER being used to support an investment in an agri-food company — this scheme is no longer open to new applications.

The national Europe en France portal also displays a regional program label of "FEDER-FSE-IEJ Languedoc-Roussillon 2014-2020" on this fact sheet, even though the fund behind the operation is explicitly identified as FEADER. The fund is confirmed, but the exact link to the rural development program and the corresponding FEADER measure still needs to be verified before final normalization.

Results and outcomes

Figures on jobs, revenue or additional volumes are not specified in the official fact sheet.

Results are distinguished by nature (achieved, stated objective, forecast, estimate) — never presented as certain without this distinction.
