A technology building block is a breakthrough component (material, process, sensor, critical software) that needs to be matured before it can be integrated into a product. These projects combine high scientific intensity, long timeframes and high uncertainty: they fall under funding specific to deeptech.

The catalogue has only {{ouvertes}} open schemes specifically attached to this stage. R&D funding and the European Innovation Council's European programmes complement this offer.

What drives the cost of maturing a technology?

Three items account for most of the expenses.

Partnership research

Work with laboratories and technical centres, often the source of the technology.

Maturity ramp-up

Moving from a laboratory result to a technology demonstrated in a representative environment.

Protection

Patents and intellectual property strategy, decisive for the value of the building block.

Grant

Aide au développement deeptech (AAD)

Bpifrance

Up to €2,000,000

For breakthrough innovation with high technological content: up to €2 million and 45% of expenses, as a grant and repayable advance.

Bpifrance's deeptech development grant

The Deeptech Development Grant targets breakthrough innovation projects with high technological content. According to the catalogue, it can reach €2,000,000 and 45% of forecast expenses, combining a grant and a repayable advance. The technology readiness level, the work programme and the funding plan determine the support granted.

Industrial decarbonisation: ADEME's calls for projects

ADEME funds two families of projects. IBaC PME supports innovation projects led by a single SME, on technologies or services for industrial decarbonisation. DEMIBaC supports the development of technology building blocks, their demonstration, and the first industrial deployments of low-carbon solutions. In both cases, rates, caps and dates are set by the specifications of each call round.

And Europe?

The European Innovation Council (EIC) funds deeptech at every stage: Pathfinder for exploratory research, Transition for maturation, Accelerator for market launch. These instruments are not listed as individual grants in the catalogue; the EIC guide details how they work.

Closed schemes (history)

These schemes are no longer open to applications; they stay listed for reference and in case they reopen.

Schemes linked to this stage after individual review (unreviewed proposals are never shown). Scope is "national" or "local" based on the territory declared by the scheme; 0 scheme(s) with no territory on record are counted in neither.

Steps to secure funding

  1. 1Assess the technology's maturityFrom laboratory result to demonstration in a representative environment.
  2. 2Secure intellectual propertyPatents, licences with the originating laboratories.
  3. 3Choose the instrumentDeeptech grant, ADEME call or European programme depending on the project.
  4. 4Build partnershipsLaboratories, technical centres, future industrial customers.

Frequently asked questions

What distinguishes deeptech from conventional innovation?

Deeptech is based on a breakthrough scientific or technical advance, often originating from public research, with long development cycles and high uncertainty.

Can these grants be combined with the CIR?

Yes, but grants received are deducted from the basis of the research tax credit.

Are ADEME's calls permanent?

No, they run in successive rounds, each with its own specifications and dates.
