Grant or repayable advance: what's the difference?

A grant is generally not intended to be repaid if the scheme's obligations are met. A repayable advance is a sum to be repaid under the conditions set out. Several regional schemes for SMEs take the form of zero-interest repayable advances, sometimes intended to supplement equity contributions and a bank loan. You need to check the financing structure, eligible expenses, caps and repayment obligations.

Examples of business grants

The "Creation grant" ("Aide à la création") aims to strengthen the cash position of SMEs setting up a business, in the form of a zero-interest repayable advance, within the limits and conditions of its regulations. The "Growth grant" ("Aide à la croissance") supports certain strategic projects. The "Equipment investment grant" ("Aide à l'investissement matériel") targets investments in production equipment. The "Strategic consulting grant" ("Aide au conseil stratégique") supports external consulting services for small businesses meeting the set criteria. These examples are not interchangeable: each page determines the target audience, sectors and eligible expenses.

How to search for a grant?

Use the official guide to grants and services to filter schemes by area, audience and type of support. Then describe the project, its location, the legal structure, the headcount, the timeline and the planned expenses. Before signing a quote or starting to spend, check whether the regulations require a prior application. Some schemes are limited by a filing deadline or by available budgets.

Regional grants, partners and European funds

The Région may act together with financial partners or operators, in particular for honour loans, guarantees, equity, or collective schemes. Some operations may also be able to draw on European funds. The presence of a grant in the Capital OS database under the funder "Région Bourgogne-Franche-Comté" does not, on its own, prove that the Région is the sole funder, the direct operator, or that the scheme is still open. These points must be checked individually.

Preparing the application

Prepare a description of the project, a timeline, quotes, a financing plan and the accounting information requested. Are repayable advances interest-free?

Some of the Région's schemes are presented as zero-interest repayable advances, but this feature does not automatically apply to all grants. You need to check the page and the regulations for the specific grant in question.

Can several types of funding be combined?

Combining funding depends on the scheme's rules, State aid regimes, caps and the overall financing of the project. Check the combination rules and declare any other grants received or applied for.

Is a grant listed in Capital OS necessarily open?

No. The Capital OS database is used to identify the schemes associated with a funder. Whether it is open, the filing dates, the criteria, available budgets and the operator must be checked on the corresponding official page.
