The first two or three years of an SME are often the most fragile. Start-up grants have been used up, the business has not yet reached its cruising speed, and cash flow is stretched by growth itself: stock, customer payment terms, first employees.

Schemes dedicated to this period are few: the catalogue lists {{ouvertes}} open schemes. They cover the consolidation of cash flow and financial structure, and the honour loans that some networks grant for a first development phase.

What needs financing after start-up?

Three needs recur in the early years.

Working capital needs

Stock, outstanding customer receivables, the gap between expenses and cash collection, which grows with activity.

Financial structure

Strengthening equity or rescheduling debt to regain room for manoeuvre.

A first development phase

Equipment, a new hire, new premises, before having the track record banks expect.

How to finance cash flow in the early years?

Cash flow is financed primarily through the bank, and the difficulty for a young SME is obtaining it. Bpifrance's Cash Flow Strengthening Guarantee covers loans that strengthen the company's financial structure, whether new or for consolidation: the coverage rate is 50%, raised to 70% if the financing significantly increases bank facilities, over a period of 2 to 7 years (15 years with a property-backed security).

For a cash flow need linked to growth, Bpifrance's Prêt Boost, presented in the 'Growth' stage, is an unrestricted-use loan available to small businesses and SMEs.

Local authority consolidation advances

Some intermunicipal authorities finance the financial consolidation of companies in their area through repayable advances. The Métropole Européenne de Lille, for example, offers a financial consolidation grant for companies with more than 25 employees and at least three financial years of existence, alongside bank or shareholder co-financing; the Communauté d'agglomération du Boulonnais offers an advance capped at €100,000. These schemes are local and their terms vary considerably.

Honour loans don't stop at start-up

Several honour loan networks (Initiative France, Réseau Entreprendre, France Active) also support a first development phase a few years after start-up: the principle remains the same, a personal loan to the business owner, interest-free and without collateral, which strengthens equity and facilitates a bank loan. The catalogue lists some for this stage at local level.

Frequently asked questions

Can a young SME obtain a Bpifrance guarantee?

Yes: it is the bank that applies for it when setting up the loan. The criteria depend on the offer and the company's situation.

Are consolidation advances reserved for companies in difficulty?

They target companies that need to strengthen their financial structure, but are not in formal insolvency proceedings; each local authority sets its own criteria.

Can you get a second honour loan?

Some networks grant a development honour loan to companies they have already supported; the conditions depend on the local association.
