Renewable Heat and Cold Production from Shallow Geothermal, Aerothermal or Thalassothermal Energy
ADEME supports local authorities, companies, public bodies and associations with shallow geothermal, air-to-water aerothermal or seawater installations producing at least 25 MWh/year of renewable heat; smaller installations go through a Renewable Heat Contract.
This scheme funds installations that replace fossil fuels with renewable heating or cooling using shallow geothermal energy, air-to-water aerothermal energy or seawater. The project must demonstrate a minimum output and follow prior thinking on reducing needs, pooling and local energy resources.

Who can apply
Local authorities, companies, public bodies and associations, in all regions. Operations can concern a building, an industrial process or a heating and/or cooling network.
Eligibility conditions
Renewable heat output must reach at least 25 MWh/year for the direct aid described. Eligible systems include heat pumps on a shallow aquifer, borehole field, geostructures, horizontal/compact exchangers, wastewater, sea water, surface water or thermal water, as well as air-to-water heat pumps. The applicant must consider sobriety, pooling, waste heat and other local renewables.
What the scheme covers
Shallow geothermal installations and air-to-water heat pump systems or systems using surface/sea water, to produce heat and possibly cooling, dedicated to a building/process or linked to a heating network.
Amount and funding terms
Funding falls under the conditions “Installations géothermie de surface et aérothermie – 2026” and depends on energy and environmental performance, the quantity of heating/cooling produced and the accepted costs. The page summary gives no single rate; installations below 25 MWh/year are supported only via Renewable Heat Contracts.
How to apply
Commission the feasibility study and document the source, expected output, COP and heat pump performance. Check whether the project exceeds the 25 MWh/year threshold; below it, contact ADEME about a Renewable Heat Contract. Apply on AGIR after prior discussion with the regional office.
Timeline
Running from 1 January to 31 December 2026, in all regions. The 25 MWh/year threshold and performance criteria must be confirmed by ADEME before finalising the financing plan.
