Combining Income with the Return-to-Employment Allowance (ARE)
For certain returns to work, France Travail deducts 70% of gross pay from the theoretical allowance, subject to the combination cap. For self-employed activity, the combination may be limited to 60% of remaining entitlements for rights governed by the rules in force since 1 April 2025. Check your individual file.
Partially combining the return-to-work allowance (allocation d’aide au retour à l’emploi, ARE) with pay depends on the type of activity and the beneficiary’s situation. Do not confuse returning to salaried work, starting a business and choosing the ARCE (lump-sum payment of entitlements), which cannot be combined with continued monthly ARE for the same business creation.

Who can apply
Jobseekers receiving ARE who return to work or start a business, subject to remaining entitlements and the applicable rules.
Eligibility conditions
The beneficiary must remain registered, update their situation and declare their income. The rules vary depending on whether the activity is salaried or self-employed and on the date entitlements were opened.
What the scheme covers
ARE can be combined with earned income under conditions if the jobseeker remains registered and declares their income. For self-employed activity, the rules and caps differ notably according to when entitlements were opened.
How to apply
Declare your activity and income each month when updating your France Travail situation; use the simulator and contact your adviser to have the calculation confirmed.
Timeline
The rules depend on the date of return to work and when entitlements were opened; there is no single application timetable.
