Support for Publishing in the Gallo Language

The official regional page provides aid for publishing books in Gallo and additional aid for audio materials. Rates and caps differ for new books, reprints and bilingual formats. The application must demonstrate publication at the publisher’s expense, the quality of the language project and compliance with regional publicity obligations.

The Brittany Region supports publishing houses publishing in Gallo, including certain books accompanied by audio materials. To prepare an application, distinguish printing costs from audio costs and check whether the project is a new book or a reprint: the scale and accepted costs vary accordingly.

Who can apply

Professional publishing houses, voluntary and commercial, based in Brittany. Also check the location, legal form, business size and any sector exclusions in the current rules.

Eligibility conditions

Supported books must carry on the back cover a mention of the Region’s support (“Bani o l’aïde de la rejion Bertègn”) and its logo. Beneficiaries must publish at their own expense, which involves signing a contract with the author or translator specifying the percentage of pay, calculated on the book’s retail price, from the first copy sold — books published at the author’s expense will not be accepted; make the legal deposit and obtain an ISBN for published books; publish and regularly update a catalogue of their productions and work with a professional distributor; promote published books through listing in bibliographic and commercial databases; respect professional ethics in their relations with authors, other publishers, distribution channels, bookshops and librarians; send the Brittany Region a publishing programme, which may be adapted or changed during the year. Before applying, confirm the version of the rules, the combination rules, the conditions for maintaining the activity and any obligations after payment.

What the scheme covers

Printing costs excluding VAT of the book; costs excluding VAT of recording and producing audio materials. For bilingual books, regional support only covers fully bilingual books, with the Gallo text corresponding entirely to the French text; any imbalance is only allowed in favour of Gallo. Present the costs by item, with quotes and timetable. Do not place orders or start works before confirming whether a prior application or written approval is required.

Amount and funding terms

New books: in Gallo — grant of 50% of the printing cost excluding VAT, up to €3,000 per book; bilingual Gallo/other language — grant of 25% of the printing cost excluding VAT, up to €1,500 per book. Reprinted books: in Gallo — grant of 25% of the printing cost excluding VAT, up to €1,500 per book; bilingual Gallo/other language — grant of 12.5% of the printing cost excluding VAT, up to €750 per book. For a book in Gallo or bilingual Gallo/other language with audio materials, the Region’s support may not exceed 50% of eligible costs excluding VAT, up to €1,000, covering the costs of recording and producing the audio materials in Gallo, excluding promotional budget and only for productions corresponding entirely to the Gallo texts of the accompanying book. To be confirmed: check the cost base, caps, combination and scale in force before budgeting the income.
